1. Policy Statement

Abilume C.I.C. is committed to preventing modern slavery and human trafficking in all areas of its work and operations. Modern slavery is a serious crime and a violation of fundamental human rights. It includes slavery, servitude, forced or compulsory labour, and human trafficking.

 

Our organisation adopts a zero-tolerance approach to modern slavery and is committed to acting ethically, transparently, and with integrity in all business relationships. We aim to ensure that modern slavery does not occur within our organisation, volunteer activities, or supply chains.

 

2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Ensure compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2015.

  • Protect individuals from exploitation.

  • Promote ethical working practices.

  • Provide guidance to staff, volunteers, partners, and suppliers on identifying and reporting concerns.

 

3. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Employees

  • Volunteers

  • Trustees and directors

  • Contractors and agency workers

  • Suppliers, partners, and service providers working with Abilume C.I.C.

 

4. Our Commitment

Abilume C.I.C. will:

  • Maintain fair and lawful recruitment and employment practices.

  • Ensure that workers and volunteers are treated with dignity and respect.

  • Conduct appropriate checks when engaging suppliers or contractors.

  • Promote awareness of modern slavery among staff and volunteers.

  • Encourage reporting of concerns without fear of retaliation.

  • Take immediate action if modern slavery is suspected or identified.

 

5. Identifying Modern Slavery

Signs that may indicate modern slavery include:

  • Individuals not having control of their identification documents

  • Signs of intimidation, threats, or abuse

  • Workers appearing fearful or unable to communicate freely

  • Poor living or working conditions

  • Unusual restrictions on movement or communication

Any concerns should be reported immediately.

 

6. Reporting Concerns

Anyone who suspects modern slavery within the organisation or its supply chain should report the concern to:

  • A manager or director

  • The safeguarding lead

  • The board of directors

Reports will be treated seriously and investigated confidentially.

 

Concerns may also be reported externally to:

  • The UK Modern Slavery Helpline (08000 121 700)

  • Local safeguarding authorities or police if immediate risk exists.

 

7. Responsibilities

Directors / Management

  • Ensure this policy is implemented and reviewed annually.

  • Promote ethical working practices.

Staff and Volunteers

  • Remain vigilant for signs of exploitation.

  • Report concerns immediately.

Suppliers and Partners

  • Must comply with relevant legislation and ethical standards.

  • Must not engage in practices involving forced labour or human trafficking.

 

8. Training and Awareness

Abilume C.I.C. will provide appropriate guidance or training for staff and volunteers so they can:

  • Understand what modern slavery is

  • Recognise warning signs

  • Know how to report concerns

 

9. Breaches of the Policy

Any breach of this policy may result in:

  • Disciplinary action

  • Termination of contracts or partnerships

  • Reporting to authorities where appropriate

 

10. Monitoring and Review

This policy will be reviewed annually by the board of Abilume C.I.C. to ensure compliance with legislation and best practice.
